Best Formations in GoT: Dragonfire — the honest guide
Updated: July 2026 · based on a simulation engine calibrated with real in-game captures
If you're searching for "the best formation" in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, the short answer
is uncomfortable: there is no universal best formation. The optimal one depends on which dragons
you own, at what stars and level, and what you're fighting. This guide gives you the rules that ARE
universal — plus a free tool that computes the optimal formation for your account.
1. How a formation works (the confirmed part)
3 dragons, 3 lanes: Left Flank · Vanguard (Center) · Right Flank. Hits mostly land on the same lane or splash to the neighbor.
One troop per army: all 3 dragons share a troop type. What varies is each dragon's affinity with that troop (+20% stats).
Up to 10 rounds: if nobody falls, it's a Stalemate (draw). Initiative decides who strikes first.
⬅️ Left Warriors and Sentinels aim their buff here
⭐ Vanguard At Lv≥16 it projects its mark to the indicated flank
Right ➡️ Hunters and Champions aim their buff here
2. The 4 rules that separate a good formation from a bad one
Overlapping affinities. The art is picking trios whose affinities overlap on ONE troop. A trio where all 3 dragons have Shieldbearer affinity vastly outperforms one with scattered affinities.
Never strip your carry's affinity troop. The most expensive mistake we've measured: switching troops to favor a minor dragon and losing the +20% on your strongest Legendary. The strong dragon's affinity weighs more.
Vanguard with purpose. The center dragon (at Lv≥16) projects its vanguard mark to a specific flank. Place the dragon that best exploits that buff on that flank.
Context rules. PvE rewards killing fast while keeping troops; in PvP holding out (and the value of a draw) matters more; Siege is its own world. The same formation is not optimal in all three.
3. Why a tier list isn't enough
Tier lists rank dragons "in a vacuum": they assume maxed accounts and don't know your stars or levels.
But habits unlock per star (2★/4★/6★/8★/10★), growth rates differ by rarity, and trio synergy matters
more than individual grades. A well-supported 6★ Rare can outperform a 1★ "S-tier" Legendary.
⚡ The alternative: simulate with YOUR roster
Our optimizer tests thousands of combinations of your dragons —with your
stars, levels and habits— against a fixed panel, and ranks formations by simulated win rate.
