This guide summarizes the confirmed mechanics of Game of Thrones: Dragonfire β the same ones the simulation engine is calibrated with. It's educational content: to compute your best formation with your real roster, use the simulator.
βοΈ Quick strategy
Win the troop triangle. Cavalry > Shieldbearers > Archers > Spearmen > Cavalry. Picking the troop that counters the enemy usually matters more than any other choice.
Respect affinity. Each dragon has affinity troops that boost its stats by +20%. The ideal is a trio whose affinities overlap on a single troop that also wins the triangle.
PvP and PvE want different things. In PvE prioritize keeping troops and killing fast; in PvP, surviving and the value of a draw matter more.
Prioritize stars over levels on Legendaries. Stars unlock habits (at 2β , 4β , 6β , 8β and 10β ) that swing battles.
Let the simulator decide. Instead of copying a tier list, compute the highest win-rate formation for your account.
π§ Combat in five ideas
You field a trio: 3 dragons in 3 lanes (left Β· center Β· right), and each one brings its own troop.
Up to 10 rounds. Turn order is decided by Initiative: the fastest hits first, and sometimes kills before taking a hit.
Double rock-paper-scissors: the troop triangle plus the damage chain (βοΈ Physical damage is mitigated by Instinct, π― Tactical by Intelligence, π₯ Fire by Initiative).
Position matters: hits land on the same lane or splash through adjacency, and each dragon's Vanguard boosts one specific flank.
Troops are your health: whoever runs out of troops retreats, and fewer troops means less damage β the snowball is real.
πΊ The troop triangle
π Cavalry beats π‘οΈ Shieldbearers, which beat πΉ Archers, which beat π± Spearmen, which beat π Cavalry. βοΈ Siege loses to everyone in combat β its job is Point of Interest Durability.
Official double optimization: the ideal troop has the advantage against the enemy and positive affinity with your dragon. The Arena's "Auto troops" button does it for you.
Each dragon's Vanguard β its breed mark β projects a buff to a fixed flank when deployed (level β₯ 16): βοΈ Warriors and π‘οΈ Sentinels aim at the left flank; πΉ Hunters and π Champions at the right. That's why the center is the one projecting its aura, and you should pick it based on your carry's flank.
Honesty: the game confirms each Vanguard aims at a flank, but it does not document which position it activates from. The popular "the center spreads to the whole army" rule is from a fan tool, not official. The simulator exposes it as an adjustable parameter.
